Back in December I saw this video from my friend
and it reminded me of a really important lesson.Enable 3rd party cookies or use another browser
Law firms (and all legal organizations) are hierarchies. There is no escaping that. But just because the system is hierarchical doesn’t mean you should treat those “below” you in the organizational chart with any less respect. Some lawyers will and maybe some of your fellow summer associates might to. But be warned: doing so is not a sign of power, it is a sign of weakness.
Show respect to everyone around you not just your bosses. This includes the law firm staff that are there to support your work. The goal of being a good person should be more than enough reason to show this kindness. But just in case it isn’t, just remember that many of these individuals have exponentially more experience than you do and they can be extremely helpful along the way. Plus, everyone talks: the paralegals, the assistants, the professional staff, the janitors—everyone. And you don’t want to be the summer who is remembered as that one who thought they were “above” them.
Kindness and respect are not hard to give. But they are important.
Talk soon,
Jonah
