What's Next?
Today is the last issue of Standout Summer Associate 2025.
To everyone who has been reading along everyday (or some days), thanks for taking this 52 issue journey with me. Thanks for adding me to your daily routine. And thanks to so many of you who have written in with suggestions, gratitude, and anecdotes.
Honestly, I started SSA on a whim at the end of the spring semester thinking I would publish a piece of advice once a week or so. Instead, I’ve published almost every weekday since the middle of May (with the help of some incredible guest post collaborators). But its August 1 and if I haven’t had a chance to share a piece of advice for this summer, its probably too late now 😉.
What’s next for me? I am going to keep posting episodes of my podcast How I Lawyer (subscribe here) where I interview lawyers from across the profession about what they do, why they do it, and how they do it well. I am also going to continue my “day job” teaching legal practice and writing about the intersection of technology, legal ethics, legal communication, and the legal profession. I am also really hoping to continue writing in a newsletter format and have some ideas about how to make that happen. If this is something you’d be interested in hearing more about or discussing more please just reply to this e-mail.
I am also going to figure out how to keep SSA going next summer in newsletter form and, perhaps, in-person and digital trainings for summer associates. If that sounds like a good idea or you would connect me to your firm/internship’s intern/summer coordinator let me know that too.
But most of all, I hope you’ll take a minute to think about everything you’ve learned so far this summer. Not just from SSA but from your summer experience. Take it with you. Learn from it. And let it help you figure out where you want to head next. Or, to repeat one of my favorite all-time quotes from Adlai Stevenson II,
When you leave, don’t forget why you came.
Keep standing out and keep in touch,
Jonah
PS. If this newsletter has been helpful to you, I’d appreciate it so much if you let me know by replying to this e-mail. It helps me figure out how to spend my time on it in the future and also helps me create materials to encourage others to subscribe in the future.
